Recently, the government announced the \'Green New Deal Policy\' and there has been an increased amount of interest in the area for new renewable energy. Thus, Yeungnam University (president Hyo-soo Lee) invited Lee Tae-yong (54), president of Korea Energy Management Corporation, to discuss new driving forces for the local economy through \'Green Energy Industries\'. At 10:30am on the 4th, Yeungnam University hosted a special seminar for the Daegu-Gyeongsangbukdo Solar Cell/Module Process Regional Innovation Center (director Jae-hak Jung, hereinafter \'Daegu-Gyeongsangbukdo Solar Cell RIC\'). In this special seminar for New & Renewable Energy industries in Daegu and Gyeongsangbukdo, Lee Tae-yong announced the \'New & Renewable Energy policy and industrialization strategy\'. In addition, there are plans to make time for discussing the current issues and demands of the region through debates with companies, professors, experts and graduate school students. In this special seminar, Jeon Chan-wook RIC center vice director is expected to speak on \'the Corporate support for Daegu-Gyeongsangbukdo Solar Cell RIC\'. Professor Jae-hak Jung (47, School of Display and Chemical Engineering) stated, \"I hope that this special seminar will be an opportunity to foster the local industry related to New & Renewable Energy such as the solar energy industry and to create jobs in the future.\" The \'Daegu-Gyeongsangbukdo Solar Cell RIC\' was opened last year in July with the designation of MEST for RIC and for 10 years until 2018, 16.6 billion won, including 7 billion won from national funding, will be invested in solar energy research and industry support. In addition, it is acting as a strategic base for fostering the local New & Renewable energy industry by holding meetings with assemblyman Hee-ryong Won (Grand National Party, Yancheon Seoul) who is the representative of the Climate Change and New & Renewable Energy Research Association.

<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Speaking at University of Oxford and University of Manchester Internationally accredited expert on \'Webometrics\' [February 2, 2009] Professor Han-woo Park (38, Department of Media and Communication) of Yeungnam University, who is one of a handful of \'webometrics\' experts in Korea, has been recently invited by prestigious universities in England as a guest speaker one after another. \'Webometrics\' is a new academic field for analyzing social networks through website contents and hyperlinks. Professor Park was invited to the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) at University of Oxford on the 27th of last month and made a speech titled ‘Social Hyperlink Analysis, Webometrics, and Digital Networks in South Korea’. He is also expected to speak at the University of Manchester in England on the 18th. The title of the lecture is ‘Peeling off the Layers on Knowledge Networks in terms of Collaboration and Communication Relations in the System of Innovation: A case of South Korea\'. In this lecture Professor Park will reveal the knowledge-linkage pattern that connects universities, businesses and the government of Korea, and he is also expected to compare the knowledge-based innovation system of Korea with the system of Netherlands. For this, Professor Park will be using webometrics, scientometrics and technometrics as an index. In addition, Park is also scheduled to analyze the internet use methods as a method for interaction with the existing the Scientific Communication Pattern. Despite Park being a young scholar in his 30s, he is internationally recognized. He was also listed in the two most prominent who\'s-who books 4 times last year. Just last year, he published 7 theses in international journals for a total of 21 since 2002. Park has also been in the center of the limelight for his research achievements on \'Web Space Analysis on Political Websites\', which was performed in cooperation with the Korea Research Foundation. He is currently the co-editor the international journal, 《Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia》and is also active as an operations committee director of \'Information Analysis and e-Research Forum\', which is an industry-academic association. His books include 『Media Use in the Digital Age: White Book for the 21st Century Human』(Coauthor, 2006),『Internet and International Academic Information Network Hyperlink』(Asan Research Center Vol. 179, 2005), 『Media and Culture in Information Age』(Coauthor, 1998). He majored in Communications at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Seoul National University Graduate School (Masters), New York State University (PhD). He also worked as a researcher for the Dutch Royal Association and is now a professor of Department of media and communication at Yeungnam University.

MEST and KCUE announced the results of the 2008 academics evaluation on 3 fields of economics, physics and oriental medicine on the 29th. According to the results, Yeungnam University was ranked \'best\' together with Konkuk University, Kyunghee University, Kongju University, Dankook University, Dongguk University, Myongji University, Pukyong University, University of Seoul, Sungkyunkwan University, Soongsil University, Ewha Woman\'s University, University of Incheon, Inha University, Chonbuk University, Chungang University, Hannam University and Hanyang University. The self-evaluation system for universities that MEST announced last December refers to self-evaluation of education conditions, facilities and curriculums, and disclosing them on the internet. Thus, all 4 year universities will have to evaluate their programs according to their own standards and disclose them on the internet by the coming December.

<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Send 50 Students for foreign exchange studies every year [January 30, 2009] \"It\'s extremely important for our future to learn about China in order to face off against China, which will be the 21st century \'black hole\'. With this the case, how can we not invest in our students?\" Professors of the School of Chinese Language & Culture has donated a heavy chunk of their personal money for their students. They want their students to study as much as they want without worrying about tuition. The group of professors in the School of Chinese Language & Culture visited the president of the university on the 30th and donated 300 million won from 13 professors for scholarships. Park Woon-seok (57), dean of the School of Chinese Language & Culture, asked, \"Why should we think twice about this money when we are educating young talent who will compete with the Chinese in the global arena?\" He also added, \"We will provide support for our students by sending 50 students to China as exchange students every year for 1 year so that they can learn not only the Chinese language but also the Chinese culture.\" The love of their students by these professors was also a big issue in 2004 as well. 5 professors of Chinese Language & Culture made dumplings and Chinese food during the Daedong festival and sold them to make 2 million won, which they donated as scholarship funds. Honorary professor Jang-woo Lee and Professor Woon-seok Park also donated 5 million won each by taking out part of their retirement allowances in advance. In addition, the professors also donated all royalty on their copyrighted documents as scholarships, which has amounted to 300 million won now. Based on this, Yeungnam University School of Chinese Language & Culture is planning to work harder on learning all about China. While sending 50 exchange students for 1 year to 15 universities in China annually, short-term education programs such as exploring China will be expanded in order to help all students in this school to experience the culture and lifestyle of China. Furthermore, over 50% of major-level classes are to be conducted in Chinese in order to help students attain HSK level 9 (equivalent to 900 on TOEIC) before they graduate. For this, 7 Chinese full-time professors from Beijing University and Fudan University have already been recruited. Moreover, the school\'s own scholarships are also to be paid in order to motivate students to pursue knowledge. <BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Screen theses on the international architecture and environment journal 《Indoor and Built Environment》 [January 22, 2009] Professor Sung-ok Baek (Department of Environmental Engineering, 53, Photo) of Yeungnam University will be on the editorial board for an SCI level international journal from January. Professor Baek was recently notified by 《Indoor and Built Environment》 journal of England that he is appointed in the editorial board. This journal is issued by \'The International Society of the Built Environment\' and is an SCI level international journal that has been published since 1992. Thus, Professor Baek will be reviewing theses on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) that are included in indoor air from around the world. In addition, Park will be in charge of reviewing theses from Korea, China, Hong Kong, Japan and the rest of Asia, while finding others to be in charge of reviewing. Professor Park holds a PhD from London University in England (Environmental Engineering) and focused on studying the causes, behavior and eradication of hazardous materials in the air, while especially concentrating on measuring and analyzing PAH and VOC in the air. Furthermore, Park is conducting in-depth studies on all sectors related to the atmospheric environment, including the environmental behavior and indoor ventilation of hazardous atmosphere pollutants (HAPs).

On January 16, 150 guests participated in the ceremony for the completion of the Chunma Arts Center that has a total floor space of 17,083㎡, spanning 2 lower level floors and 7 upper level floors. It is a high tech building equipped with performance halls, conference rooms and exhibition galleries. The Grand Hall has a capacity 1,899 and is square auditorium that represents Mother Earth. Because of its high tech design with the best audio system, optimal lighting system and stage system adaptable to wagon type boasts, the hall is the optimized facilities for performances of various genres such as symphonies, operas, musicals and concerts. Especially, the 3-level trust stage is very unique making it a \'stage of dreams\' for conductors, producers and choreographers. Futhermore, the more accessible large recital hall, the pleasant dressing room, the complete rehearsal room, and the 5 language simultaneous interpretation room also complete this facility. The 510 capacity Chamber Hall is a medium sized round auditorium in the shape of the Sky. Its angle is set for the most pleasant view of performances and the natural lighting system on the back side of the stage creates a unique nature-friendly atmosphere. The 3rd floor provides comfort as a convention hall for international seminars or performance receptions. The Grand Hall and Chamber Hall is connected to the 2nd floor creating a harmony between the earth and the sky. The 7th floor Tower Hall is a triangular building in the shape of the Man. There are various sized meeting rooms and a cafe where people can enjoy arts and culture. The Tower Hall\'s 1st floor has a double-layered structure and is home to the digital university PR hall where visitors can get a brief view of Yeungnam University\'s history and future vision. In addition to this, it is equipped with special exhibit halls in order to play the role of the new culture incubator for the Daegu and Gyeongsangbukdo regions. Yeungnam University is planning to utilize the Chunma Arts Center as an \'Open Campus\' for local residents. The sky lounge of the Tower Hall also has a 360 degree panorama view for a unique experience to visitors. The outdoor exhibition area and green area are expected to act as a community park while also serving as a monumental park for the 60th year of Yeungnam University. Constructino of Chunma Arts Center started on May 15, 2007 and it was designed by the famous Korean architect Chun-soo Ryu, while Hanjin Heavy Industry and Youngnam Construction\'s technology completed its construction.

<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> \"With work experience, no worries about getting a job!\" [January 20, 2009] Even in times of difficulty to find a job, students of the Yeungnam University Global Business Project Team has no worries for finding a job. Because they are ready with work experience through industry-academic cooperation, large conglomerates are looking to recruit them. Yeungnan University GB Project Team has been led by Professor Gi-hyeong Kim of the School of International Economics and Business, started with 17 students in 2003. They were selected in their 2nd semester of the sophomore year and for 2 years until their first semester in their senior year they were trained in trade and English. There are now 40 students in the 5th and 6th teams. The GB Project Team is different from other clubs that focus simply on improving English skills and acquiring certificates of qualification. They focus on improving industry-academic relations with domestic and foreign companies, while participating in actual projects of local companies in order to get on-hands training. There were a total of 60 projects that the GB Project Team worked on with companies for the past 3 years. Roughly, they are involved in 20 projects per year. The types of projects that they take part in are quite diverse. Starting from translating documents, they are also involved with overseas site investigations, contacting and consulting buyers as well as other complex trade work such as finalizing patent contracts. Results of such projects are highly praised by the companies as well. According to Professor Gi-hyeon Kim(50), the reason why they focus on practical work experience is because, \"after speaking with HR representatives from companies, I learned that they prefer applicants with work experience and internship experience.\" He added, \"It\'s obvious that companies will prefer human resources with foreign language abilities and work experience, rather than picking students based on the name of their school.\" Such work-experience based education has become a key for opening the door to employment. Students of the GB Project Team have been employed by the companies which their wanted. Of the 80 members of the GB Project Team that have graduated or are expecting to graduate in February, 59 have found employment at companies such as the Korea International Trade Association, Samsung, CJ, STX, Yuhan, Incheon Airport Corporation, Kukmin, Shinhan, Foreign Exchange, Hana, Daegu Banks and Nonghyup, for a whopping employment rate of 73.8%. Jang Sung-hwan (26, School of International Economics and Business, senior), who is expecting to graduate in February, has been picked up by Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance and went to the company orientation. Even in the worse of times for employment, he had worries, though they were joyful worries. The regional largest automobile parts company accepted his application at the end of last year and a interrelated company of SK Group also asked him to come in for a final interview, but he chose to stay with Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance. He chose the company because having to meet many different people and taking on new challenges fit his personality. He stated, \"I got the opportunity to utilize what I learned because of the work experience with the GB Project Team\" and he also added, \"Since I got the job I wanted, I will work even harder in order to live up to the honor of the GB Project Team.\"

<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Contribution in establishing labor-management-civil-government partnership and establishing a culture of cooperation [December 24, 2008] Professor Hyo-soo Lee of Yeungnam Univeristy (57, School of Economics and Finance, 13th Yeungnam University president-elect) was awarded the \'Iron Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit\' for his contribution to establishing labor-management-civil-government partnership and establishing a culture of cooperation. The Ministry of Labor held the \'2008 Labor Win-Win Cooperation Awards\' at the Seoul Education Culture Building on the 24th. In these awards, Professor Lee was awarded the \'Iron Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit\', which is rarely awarded to people in the academic sector. The Ministry of Labor said that he was awarded for not only playing a leading role for developing and pursuing theories and policies on local labor-management-civil-government partnerships, but also showing the outstanding leadership skills to actively participate in global arenas such as OECD, IIRA and Global HR Forum to contribute the establishment of a local partnership. Professor Lee is famous for developing theories on the labor market, employment relations and HR development, which is rare for an East Asian. He developed three theories over a time span of 20 years, including the \'Segmented Labor Market Theory\' in 1983, the \'PDR System Theory in 1995\' and \'RESAP (Regional Economic and Social Advancement Partnership) in 2003. Thus, he achieved considerable results in the labor-management field. The RESAP model was published by the OECD in February 2008 and became a focal point of attention internationally. He has also written 20 books and published over 100 papers. In addition, he has also actively attempted to integrate the labor-relation theories in the actual world. As part of this, he worked as the director of the Korea Labor Economic Association, Korea Industrial Relations Association, the chair of the 13th IIRA World Council, and committee member of the \'The Presidential Committee on Job Strategy\'. He is currently an executive director of IIRA Asia, committee member of the Presidential National Economic Advisory Council for the president, committee member of the Minimum Wage Council consigned by the President, president of Daegu-Gyeongbuk Job Creation and Human Resource Development, and the chairman of Daegu-Gyeongbuk Employment Council. Last October he developed the \'10 Major Agenda for Executing Knowledge Economy of Daegu-Gyeongbuk\' and initiated a proclamation ceremony and co-signing by 15 top leaders in labor, management, civil and government sectors, including the mayor of Daegu and governor of Gyeongbuk in order to contribute greatly to form a local partnership. The 10 major agenda is a new paradigm for developing human resources and creating jobs. This is a system based on the industrial-academic-private-public partnership for the local residents and by the local residents that could develop human resources led by the region and create jobs. It is assessed to have presented a local governance initiative. Furthermore, while working as a committee member of the Minimum Wage Council since 2006, he played a decisive role to find a point of agreement for minimum wage rates for 2 continuous years through active talks and persuasion for the establishment of a compromising culture among labor, management, civil and government sectors. Due to these efforts, he also won the individual labor-management harmony award in the \'New Labor Management Culture Awards\' by the Ministry of Labor in December 2004. The \'Labor Win-Win Cooperation Awards\' is an awarding system enacted for the first time this year by the Ministry of Labor, and it presents 99 awards including 16 medals and citations to five sectors such as outstanding local governments, local contributors, as well as company, labor and management representatives. Daegu was awarded a presidential citation and an award of 300 million won together with Jeollanam-do as the best local government organs that pursued development of local labor-management relations and creating jobs.
